4A – Forming An Opportunity Belief
1) I believe there exists an opportunity for forming a disc jockey school. For young DJs to learn how to spin.
2) I think the need that exists is for people that want to learn how to mix music and follow/discover their passion. I believe the need has always existed but that due to Covid-19, it’s even greater to some extent. There exist websites that teach you how to DJ already as well as YouTube videos so a lot of my potential customers have been using them.
I am 80% sure this opportunity exists.
3) My prototypical customer would be a high school graduate/college student attempting to chase his dream disc jockeying but that has been unable to do so thus far due to financial/other setbacks.
4) Interview 1
Prototypical Customer: Jack - has been attempting to get into DJing but hasn’t had the right motivation and knowledge to do so.
I interviewed Jack through zoom and he informed me that he has been attempting to get into DJing for some time now. His need is related to his passion for music and exists because all the DJ schools require a lot of money for subscriptions. He has a friend that DJs but hasn’t been able to see him due to quarantine so he’s stuck at home unable to follow his passion. He experiences this need all the time and has had it since he graduated from high school. He told me that at the moment he’s been trying to figure things out on his own but it hasn’t been going well. He was satisfied with my solution.
Interview 2
Prototypical Customer: Cody - has had some DJ experience but hasn’t made the progress he desires yet.
Cody is a sophomore at the University of Florida. He has been DJing for a year but hasn’t made the progress he’s been looking for. He has the need to learn more about DJing. He tried signing up for online DJ classes but they didn’t help him much except to master the absolute basic. He’s had this need for 2 months now. He realized he had it when he attempted to DJ at a night club and realized he didn’t have the skill set required. He’s been attempting to use a plethora of online DJ schools at the moment with no results. He support my idea but doesn’t know if it’s going to provide him with the skill set required.
Interview 3
Prototypical Customer: James - has been DJing for some time and wants to find a way to pass down his passion and knowledge.
James is a graduate of University of Florida taking a gap year before going for a masters in marketing. His need is passing down knowledge of music and DJing to amateur DJs and those that are looking into getting into music. His has this need for some for some time now and was teaching his friends before quarantine happened. He supported my idea and suggested I have an online sector.
5) Reflect
From my interviews I learned that the opportunity exists and James also gave me 2 ideas; allowing knowledgeable DJs to pass down knowledge and become part of the teaching team and to create an online sector.
6) Summary
I believe the opportunity exists but adjustments are going to have to be made due to the virus going around and quarantine. I think the need is relatively strong but it’s not going to be easy to compete with high end DJ schools.
